CBC Edmonton AM – Interview with Their Majesties
The members of an international medieval society don’t call our province Alberta. Rather, it is known as The Kingdom of Avacal. The Society for Creative Anachronism is a re-enactment group that celebrates life before the 17th century. This weekend, the king and queen of Avacal are coming to the Barony of Borealis, also known as Edmonton. We talked to the newly crowned Leaha Maisonneuve and Ellias Cote who are fresh from their coronation last month.

From the King and Queen
Greetings Avacal!
We raise our glasses in celebration and thanks to the populace of Avacal. To the skilled artisans whoâs wares enrich the land. To the virtuous warriors who stand ever vigilant. To the noble officers whoâs tireless work keep the dream alive. To the newcomers who chose to come out and join us for the first time, and to those who stayed, year after year, after year. To the teachers, the students, the elders, craftsmen, the merchants, the chefs, the brewers, the singers and songs. To the children, who will lead when we are gone. And to those who have led before. We raise our glasses. Thank you all.
Count Gunther and Countess Eyoddi, their names be praised have led this Kingdom well and in passing their duties to us now retire with our eternal gratitude. It is the greatest honor to serve Avacal as its new King and Queen. Know that during our reign we will strive to represent all of Avacal and its people and to make our Kingdom known to all as the shining jewel that it is. We look forward to challenges we will face. For Avacal is strong, its traditions and foundations run deep allowing us to embrace the new and build a Kingdom worthy of its people.
The future is just that, the future. No one can tell what might happen. But we can promise you this. We will always be there to listen and to lead. Know that any person, no matter what rank or station, will be heard by the Crown. For in as much as we are the sovereigns of Avacal we are in truth the servants of its people.
This we swear to you, the populace of Avacal.
So say I, Ellias, King of Avacal
So say I, Kiera, Queen of Avacal

From the King and Queen
Hail, noble populace of our beloved Avacal,
As the sun sets on another glorious war season, we find ourselves amidst the whispers of autumn winds, the rustle of falling leaves, and the gentle embrace of a chilling breeze. The fields, once battlegrounds, are now adorned with the golden hues of ripened crops, ready for harvest. The toil of the land has yielded its bounty, a testament to the enduring spirit of our people. With the harvest moon illuminating our nights, we invite you all to revel in the fruits of your labor. The air is crisp, filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and the warmth of hearth fires. Itâs a time for celebration, a moment to savor the fruits of our collective efforts. As the last sheaf is gathered and the final apple plucked, let us come together to feast, to sing, and to share the stories of our triumphs and challenges.
Yet, with every season, change graces our lands. The sun, now waning, signals not only the end of war but the conclusion of our reign. Our time as your sovereigns draws to a close, and with hearts both full and hopeful, we look towards the future. We invite you to join us in a grand celebration, where we shall crown our heirs – those who will guide our kingdom in the times ahead. Itâs a moment of great anticipation, a bridge between the familiar past and the promising unknown. Together, we shall witness the dawning of a new era, a time for fresh ambitions and uncharted adventures.
So, dear friends, let us gather in the warmth of camaraderie and the glow of shared stories. Let us revel in the abundance of the harvest, appreciating the labor that brought us here. Let us bid farewell to the past season and welcome the coming winter with open hearts and open arms.
With love for our kingdom and gratitude for your unwavering support,
Gunther Rorikson, King
Eyoddi Lokadottir, Queen
